How to Use Smudge Sticks: A Beginner's Guide to Smudging Rituals
Smudging is one of the oldest and most powerful energy-cleansing rituals in the world. Whether you're new to spiritual practice or looking to deepen your routine, learning how to use smudge sticks properly can transform the energy of your home, body, and mind.
What Is Smudging?
Smudging is the practice of burning sacred herbs — most commonly white sage, palo santo, or dragon's blood — and using the smoke to cleanse a space, object, or person of negative or stagnant energy. It has roots in Indigenous American, South American, and African traditions and is now widely used in modern spiritual and wellness practices.
What You'll Need
- A smudge stick or smudge wand (white sage, dragon's blood, or chakra sage)
- A fireproof dish or abalone shell to catch ash
- A lighter or matches
- An open window or door to allow negative energy to exit
- A clear intention
Step-by-Step: How to Smudge Your Space
- Set your intention. Before you begin, take a moment to breathe deeply and set a clear intention. What do you want to release? What energy do you want to invite in?
- Open a window or door. This gives the negative energy a way to leave your space.
- Light your smudge stick. Hold the tip of your smudge wand over a flame for 10-20 seconds until it catches, then gently blow it out so it smoulders and produces smoke.
- Move through your space. Starting at the front door, move clockwise through each room, waving the smoke into corners, along walls, and around doorways.
- Speak your intention aloud. As you smudge, you can say: I release all negative energy from this space. Only love and light may dwell here.
- Extinguish safely. Press the lit end firmly into your fireproof dish until the ember goes out. Never leave a burning smudge stick unattended.
