HOW TO USE DIVINATION TOOLS: ORIGINS, METHODS AND DIFFERENT TYPES
HOW TO USE DIVINATION TOOLS: ORIGINS, METHODS AND DIFFERENT TYPES
Divination has long been part of humanity’s search for meaning, guidance and connection with the unseen. From the symbolism of tarot cards to the quiet practice of gazing into a crystal sphere, different tools offer different ways to explore questions and work with intuition. 🔮✨
Whether you are beginning your journey or expanding your spiritual practice, understanding a tool’s history and method can help you use it with greater confidence and intention.
WHAT IS DIVINATION?
Divination is the practice of seeking insight through symbols, patterns, objects or ritual. Depending on their beliefs and traditions, practitioners may approach it as communication with the divine, ancestral guidance, intuitive exploration or a combination of these.
The tool provides a focus for the reading. Its symbols, the question being asked and the reader’s interpretation work together to give the session meaning. Some methods follow established systems, while others leave more room for personal associations. Learning which approach your chosen tool uses is an important first step. 🌙
WHERE DID DIVINATION ORIGINATE?
Divination has no single birthplace. Different cultures developed their own practices, each shaped by its religious beliefs, environment and understanding of the world.
Ancient Chinese oracle bones preserve questions used in divination more than 3,000 years ago. The I Ching developed within Chinese tradition as a system for consulting patterns of change. Across Africa, distinct divination traditions use objects and interpretive systems connected to their communities’ spiritual teachings. These practices have their own histories; they are not one interchangeable method.
Other familiar tools developed much later. Tarot, for example, began as a card game in fifteenth-century Italy before becoming associated with divination centuries afterwards. A tool can have a rich spiritual role today without having been created for that purpose originally. (The Morgan Library & Museum)
DIFFERENT TYPES OF DIVINATION TOOLS AND HOW TO USE THEM
TAROT CARDS
Tarot combines detailed imagery with a structured system. A standard deck contains 78 cards: 22 Major Arcana and 56 Minor Arcana. Readers commonly interpret the Major Arcana as broad themes and significant lessons, while the Minor Arcana explores everyday experiences.
Its origins lie in Italian playing cards, with spiritual and fortune-telling uses developing later. (The Metropolitan Museum of Art)
How to use tarot cards:
- Choose a clear question, such as “What can help me move forward?”
- Shuffle the deck while focusing on that question.
- Draw one card or use a simple spread.
- Notice the imagery, colours, characters and your first impressions.
- Consult the guidebook and relate the card’s meaning to its position and your question.
A useful beginner spread is situation, challenge and guidance. Assign the positions before drawing, then read the cards together as a connected message. 🔮
ORACLE CARDS
Oracle decks offer a more flexible approach to card reading. Unlike tarot, they have no universal card count, suit structure or set of meanings. A deck may centre on animals, crystals, angels, nature, lunar cycles or another theme chosen by its creator.
Although the word “oracle” has ancient associations, a modern oracle deck should be understood through its own author’s system rather than assumed to reproduce an ancient practice.
How to use oracle cards:
- Read the introduction to understand the deck’s purpose.
- Ask an open question, such as “What quality can I bring into today?”
- Shuffle and draw a card.
- Study its picture and wording before opening the guidebook.
- Write down how its theme relates to your current circumstances.
A single daily card is an easy way to become familiar with a new deck. ✨
PENDULUMS
A pendulum is a weight suspended from a chain or cord. It may be made from crystal, metal, wood or another material. In divination, practitioners interpret its movements using agreed meanings or a marked board. Suspended objects, including rings, appear in historical accounts of divination across different regions. There is no need to assign every modern crystal pendulum a single ancient origin. (Wikisource, the free online library)
How to use a pendulum:
- Sit comfortably and support your elbow on a stable surface.
- Hold the chain lightly so the weight can move freely.
- Establish the movements you will interpret as “yes,” “no” and “unclear.”
- Ask one short, unambiguous question.
- Observe the movement without deliberately directing it.
- Record the result and finish the session.
Pendulums respond to tiny hand movements, including movements you may not notice. Approach the answer as part of your divination practice rather than independent proof of an external fact.
RUNES
Runes began as letters in writing systems used by Germanic peoples. The name “Futhark” comes from the sounds of the first six runes. Their historical role as writing should be distinguished from the interpretations used in modern rune readings. (Write Your Name in Runes). Modern divination sets often use the 24 symbols of the Elder Futhark, carved or painted onto stones, wood or other materials.
How to use runes:
- Learn which runic alphabet your set contains.
- Place the pieces in a pouch and focus on your question.
- Draw one rune for a simple reading.
- Consult its name and the interpretation used by your chosen guide.
- Consider how that theme connects with your question.
You can also draw three runes for situation, obstacle and possible approach. This is a modern reading format, rather than a universally documented ancient spread.
CRYSTAL BALLS, SCRYING MIRRORS AND WATER BOWLS
Scrying involves gazing into a surface and interpreting the impressions that arise. Tools include crystal spheres, dark mirrors and bowls of water. Historical accounts describe reflective and translucent surfaces being used in different cultures.
How to practise scrying:
- Choose a quiet space with soft, indirect light.
- Place your sphere, mirror or water bowl securely in front of you.
- Take a few slow breaths and settle on a question.
- Relax your gaze instead of staring intensely.
- Notice any colours, shapes, associations or mental images.
- End after a few minutes and record your impressions.
You do not need to see a clear scene. An impression may be a word, feeling or association, and some sessions may produce nothing noticeable. 🌙 Keep crystal and glass spheres out of direct sunlight, where they can concentrate light and create a fire risk.
TEA-LEAF READING
Tea-leaf reading, also called tasseography or tasseomancy, involves interpreting the patterns left inside a cup. Related practices use coffee grounds. Their customs vary, so there is no single set of meanings used by every reader.
How to read tea leaves:
- Prepare loose-leaf tea in a cup with a light-coloured interior.
- Allow it to cool and drink carefully, leaving the leaves and a little liquid.
- Gently swirl the cup.
- Turn it over onto a saucer and let the remaining liquid drain.
- Return the cup upright and look for shapes and clusters.
You might notice something resembling a road, bird, heart or tree. Consider its personal meaning as well as any meanings given in your guide.
Some systems assign different time frames to the rim, middle and base of the cup. Choose one approach before the reading and use it consistently.
CHARMS, STONES, SHELLS AND BONES
Casting methods involve scattering or drawing objects and interpreting their positions, groupings or orientations.
Some belong to specific cultural and religious traditions. For example, cowrie shells feature in Yoruba divination, while Ifá uses its own specialised methods and sacred palm nuts. These systems have distinct teachings and should not be treated as generic charm casting. For a personal modern charm practice, you can create your own clearly defined symbol set.
How to begin personal charm casting:
- Choose a small collection of objects with recognisable meanings.
- Write down those meanings before your first reading.
- Mark areas on a cloth for themes such as home, work and personal growth.
- Gently cast the objects onto the cloth.
- Interpret where they land and which objects group together.
A key might represent opportunity, a heart relationships, and a leaf growth. These are meanings assigned for your own system, not universal traditional interpretations. 🗝️
I CHING COINS OR YARROW STALKS
The I Ching, or Book of Changes, is an ancient Chinese text with both divinatory and philosophical significance. Its system uses 64 hexagrams, each made from six broken or unbroken lines. Traditionally, hexagrams can be generated using yarrow stalks or coins. The reading involves consulting the text, including any changing lines, rather than interpreting the objects by appearance.
How to begin:
- Choose an accessible translation with clear casting instructions.
- Frame a question about a situation or possible course of action.
- Follow its coin or yarrow-stalk procedure.
- Build the six lines from the bottom upwards.
- Read the relevant hexagram and changing-line passages.
- Reflect on how their themes relate to your circumstances.
This method rewards patient study and attention to the text.
HOW TO PREPARE FOR A DIVINATION READING
A simple, consistent routine can help you give the reading your full attention. You do not need an elaborate altar or a large collection of tools.
- Prepare your space. Choose somewhere comfortable and arrange your tools within easy reach.
- Set an intention. Decide what you want to explore. An intention might be: “I approach this reading with clarity, openness and honesty.”
- Use an optional cleansing ritual. If it fits your practice, mark the beginning with sound, visualisation or suitable incense. Water, salt and smoke are not appropriate for every material, so care for the physical tool as well as its symbolic role.
- Ask a focused question. “What should I consider before taking this next step?” usually provides more room for interpretation than a vague question about your entire future.
- Record the reading. Note the date, exact question, cards or symbols, and your initial interpretation before revisiting it later. 📖✨
WHICH DIVINATION TOOL SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?
Choose according to the way you enjoy learning and interpreting.
⭐ Tarot cards: For people who enjoy detailed pictures, connected stories and a structured system.
⭐ Oracle cards: For readers who prefer themed imagery and flexible, guidebook-led messages.
⭐ Pendulums: For a simple movement-based ritual with clearly defined responses.
⭐ Runes: For those interested in learning a compact set of symbols and their historical background.
⭐ Scrying tools: For people drawn to quiet observation and open-ended impressions.
⭐ Tea leaves: For readers who enjoy discovering shapes and associations.
⭐ Personal charm sets: For those who want to develop a consistent symbolic language of their own.
⭐ The I Ching: For people who enjoy studying a text and reflecting on patterns of change.
Begin with one method. Familiarity with a single tool gives you a stronger foundation than trying to learn everything at once.
BUILDING YOUR DIVINATION PRACTICE
Let your practice develop through curiosity, study and consistency. Learn the history of your chosen method, understand its symbols, and give yourself time to form interpretations without forcing an answer.
When a reading feels unclear, record it and return to it later rather than repeatedly drawing until you receive a preferred message. Over time, your journal can help you notice recurring themes and distinguish your original impressions from later interpretations.
Whether you are drawn to cards, runes, a pendulum or the still surface of a scrying bowl, begin with a clear question and a willingness to listen. Let your chosen tool become part of a thoughtful ritual that makes space for reflection, spiritual connection and discovery. 🔮✨
